The essence of this instrument is in the unique timber used. The top, back and sides are Queensland Blackwood and feature a complex figure with elements of quilting, fiddleback and birdseye. This beautiful timber is a close cousin of Hawaiian Koa, the traditional timber used in the famous Weissenborn lap slide guitars of the 1920s and 1930s.
Both the look and the sound of the Blackwood is reminiscent of Koa. It has an amazingly rich colour with hues of brown and gold and changes colour depending on the light. The sound has both a fundamental quality and a range of beautiful overtones, the volume is ample and balanced throughout the lows, mids and highs.
The electronic sound is delivered through a Seymour Duncan Mag-Mic pickup which incorporates an acoustic magnetic pickup and a miniature microphone which can be blended in different combinations. The system is designed for live performance but the quality of tone means it can also be incorporated into recording.
Australian timbers are also used for the fingerboard and bridge which are made from Australian Mulga, an Acacia species which grows in the desert regions of North West Queensland. The fingerboard is inlaid with fine fret lines of genuine mother of pearl. It also has fiberoptic fret dots installed, this feature allows the player to see the fret positions in dark or low-light situations.
The tuners are from Gotoh Japan and are in a vintage Kluson style. They are smooth and reliable.
